Not Just the Facts

Facts are facts, right? It’s hard to argue otherwise (and we aren’t really predisposed to do so), but facts sometimes aren’t enough. Out of curiosity--or possibly laziness?--we want help drawing the lines, making the inductions from the facts presented.

In August and September 2004, Isoph and N-TEN sponsored the first-ever survey of nonprofit organizations' and associations’ use of e-learning technologies. In this issue of The Sophist we look at the results of the survey and explore their implications, teasing out some trends to suggest connections, in addition to those you make on our own.

For a balanced approach, we mix the hard numbers in “Survey Says: Widespread Use of E-learning” with anecdotes and advice from four of your colleagues in the social sector in “E-lessons Learned.”

In deference to our monologist, Loretta Donovan of the Girl Scouts of the USA, we won’t suggest that any of the advice in “E-lessons Learned” might constitute best practices. But you have to read this issue’s “Monolog” to find out why--and to get some good reading suggestions.

“In Brief” features a link to the full report of the Isoph and N-TEN e-learning survey results, as well as other Web resources and news of interest.

Whether you’re a numbers person or a words person, we hope you enjoy this Sophist’s look at e-learning in the sector.
